As a freelance journalist in New York, I have written a lot about life in the city. I recently did a weekly series for Narratively called Hostel People, and this month am profiling another local community with the next miniseries, Protest People. Over the years, I have covered topics related to Japan and wellness extensively and have also written a number of personal narratives. I've been contributing to the New York Times since 2008, and my writing has also appeared in publications such as Slate, Salon, Wired, Fast Company, New York Magazine and the New York Observer. For many years, I was an ESL teacher, most recently at Columbia University's American Language Program. I grew up in New York City, have lived in Japan and Argentina as well as California and Texas, and speak Spanish and Japanese. I welcome story tips and comments on my pieces.
